WESTFIELD, NJ — A new four-way stop has been placed at a “haphazard” Westfield intersection where one resident died in 2014.
The Town Council unanimously voted to approve the four-way stop at the intersection of Prospect Street and Cowperthwaite Place last week. The signs and new striping was installed earlier this week.
“That intersection is so haphazard. I’ve personally witnessed near misses sometimes from those out of town who already think it’s a four way stop,” said resident Cheryl Siko.

Siko and resident Sharon Stockwell also talked about their neighbor Donna Rothstein who was hit by a Range Rover in 2014 while walking him from Minowaskin Park with her husband.
Rothstein later died from her injuries. Read More: Westfield’s Donna Rothstein Dies Following Car Accident

“Please vote to pass this to honor Donna and to honor what she meant to this community,” said Stockwell.
“We certainly will be thinking about Donna when we pass this tonight,” said Mayor Shelley Brindle prior to the vote.
Councilwoman Emily Root said, “We didn’t know Mrs. Rothstein but this is so much more meaningful that we are passing this tonight.”
The Westfield Police Department will be increasing patrols and enforcement in the area to maximize awareness of and compliance with the new traffic requirement.
