UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The Upper West Side became a bit more bookish on Thursday.
A new, second location of the vertible bookseller Shakespeare & Co. has opened its doors, giving bookworms even more space to find their perfect next read.
The new book shop is located near Columbia University at 2736 Broadway near West 105th Street at the former site of Steps Clothing Company, which closed in 2023.

“COME ON BY!!” the bookstore wrote on an Instagram post sharing the news.
It was a fast turnaround for the bookseller, who officially announced the news only a month ago.

The corner space will differ from its other two locations by ditching the iconic cafe and the self-publishing espresso book machine at the new store.
The Upper West Side’s original Shakespeare & Co. was nestled on West 81st Street and closed down in 1996 – a loss to the neighborhood that author Toni Morrison told the New York Times was “melancholy and outrageous.”
In 2018, the bookseller returned to the Upper West Side at 2020 Broadway. Their Upper East Side location, like the new Broadway store, is also near a school — Hunter College — at 939 Lexington Ave.
