Longtime Cinnaminson Officer Becomes Police Chief

CINNAMINSON, NJ — Cinnaminson law enforcement has new leadership and new officers.

Cpt. William Obuchowski became Cinnaminson’s police chief, taking the helm from former Chief Richard Calabrese, who recently retired. Obuchowski was sworn into the role at Monday’s Township Committee meeting.

During the meeting, Lt. Roy Wagner was promoted to captain, and two new officers were sworn in: Zachary Edmondson and Julia Wheeler.

Obuchowski, a Cinnaminson native, has risen through the ranks throughout his 25 years with the township’s police force. He has been Cinnaminson’s highest-ranking officer since Calabrese retired May 31, serving as officer-in-charge in the weeks before he became chief.

Wagner, who also grew up in Cinnaminson, joined the township police department in 2002. He had been promoted to lieutenant in January, assuming command of Internal Affairs.

Committee Member Ernest McGill, a retired Cinnaminson police officer, said it was a “great honor” working with Obuchowski and Wagner.

Mayor Paul Conda noted that before joining the Township Committee six years ago, he only knew the officers that pulled him over, “which happens often,” he laughed. But he’s gotten to know Obuchowski and Wagner over the years and lauded both during Monday’s meeting.

“I don’t think we could ask for better,” Conda said. “Congratulations. Best of luck. We’re moving the township in the right direction, and now you’re a bigger part of it than you were an hour ago.”

The committee also honored Calabrese with a plaque. Calabrese served the department for about 25 years, becoming the township’s sixth police chief in 2019.

About 30 other Cinnaminson police officers attended the meeting.
