Frank McCourt, the former LA Dodgers owner, will buy Marseille. It is simply a matter of days now.
With this in mind, the club’s future president Jacques-Henri Eyraud and one of McCourt’s lawyers Didier Poulmaire have spent the last few weeks meeting with potential Sporting Directors and managers, according to L’Équipe.
The first individual that the duo have contacted is former AS Monaco SD Luis Campos, who is currently without a job after quitting the Principality this summer. He is now working in a freelance capacity for Manchester United.
Campos had already been on Marseille’s list before the sale of the club, and he rejected the opportunity then. For the moment, Campos appears to be positioning himself for a full-time post with the Red Devils, instead of angling for a job with OM.
The second potential Sporting Director that Marseille contacted is Monchi, currently still at Sevilla. Recently in an interview with L’Équipe, Monchi virtually made it clear that he has been in discussions with OM about the possible job and clearly has some level of interest.
However, it would cost Marseille €5m to buy him out of his current deal. Both profiles bring different things: Campos is more interested in finding very young talents for example, whereas Monchi will want more of a say on who the eventual manager is.
Marseille’s new board is also looking for a new Head of Recruitment. They like Paul Mitchell, who will soon be free from all binding commitments with Tottenham Hotspur and David Friio, who is currently Manchester United’s scout for France.
Finally, Eyraud and co. are also looking at potential replacements for Franck Passi as manager. Rudi Garcia is still without a club and has been approached. Marcelo Bielsa, after all of the summer speculation, remains someone that the project is considering approaching.
Bielsa has an offer from the Aspire Academy in Qatar and his assistants are currently watching a lot of Premier League matches. In any case, if El Loco did return to OM, there would have to be a large overhaul of the current playing squad.
During a conference in Amsterdam this week, he made it clear privately that his style of play was impossible with Marseille’s current squad.
