JOLIET — A 68-year-old Joliet man named Edgar Polk finds himself in the Will County Jail for the fourth time in 20 years, but the first time since 2011. This week, Will County Sheriff’s deputies grabbed Polk and took him to the Will County Jail in connection with Polk’s role in the violent beating of a 59-year-old man on Patterson Road in Joliet Township, court records show.
Will County prosecutors are hoping that a Will County judge can keep Polk locked away from society until his case proceeds to trial. Polk is being charged with three counts of aggravated battery.

On Sunday, July 14, at 4:15 p.m., deputies were sent to the 600 block of Patterson Road for a 911 call. The 59-year-old victim was on the ground, screaming for help. He was taken to St. Joe’s Hospital, listed in stable condition, after suffering several broken bones.
One witness to the attack, told deputies that Polk was driving a Kia minivan with the hazard lights on, off the roadway near a wooded area. Polk was interviewed by sheriff’s deputies and told them he stopped at the house on Patterson Road to talk with a woman who was there.

And that’s when he encountered the 59-year-old man, who told Polk to leave and a fight ensued.
“The defendant stated both and John had some scrapes from the altercation and he started to leave in his minivan,” prosecutors outlined. “He was leaving and noticed John had a shovel. He did a U-turn and drove back towards John. John struck his windshield with the shovel, and he struck John with the minivan.”

Polk told deputies that he was driving about 30 mph when he crashed into the victim. After that, he left the roadway and drove into a tree.
The woman who Polk was trying to see told deputies “that the defendant started the fight, and she went to hide and did not see the minivan strike John.”
Will County Judge Donald DeWilkins will conduct a pretrial detention hearing for Polk on Friday morning in Courtroom 202 to determine Polk must stay in the county jail or whether he can go back home. Polk comes from the 1400 block of Joliet’s Winifred Street.
