Princeton To Bring Inclusive Playground Equipment To Smoyer Park

PRINCETON, NJ — The Municipal Council recently adopted a resolution earmarking funds for new playground equipment at Smoyer Park.

Princeton has to provide $103,450 in matching funds for the project.

According to a memo from the Executive Director of Recreation, Mercer at Play Grant makes $500,000 available to Princeton and requires a matching amount for recreational projects.

Princeton Spent $396,100 of the available $500K Mercer grant money on the Hilltop Park improvements in 2023.

“There are now $103,450 left out of the total $500K for which Princeton can apply,” Evan Moorhead, Executive Director of Recreation said.

Princeton must submit a new application to Mercer County.

Municipal funds for this project are already available, which includes funds that were earmarked for but not spent on the Hilltop Park Project, will now be used for Smoyer Park improvements.

“We are going to do the same type of adaptive playground that we did at Hilltop which is super exciting,” Councilwoman Michelle Pirone Lambros said.

The playground project will also include new poured-in-place rubber safety surfacing will also be part of the project.

“The Smoyer Park playground was installed in 2001 so it is nearing the end of it’s lifespan,” Moorhead said.

“I’m so pleased that this is going forward,” Councilwoman Eve Niedergang said. “What was put in at Hilltop has been such a great success and that we are modeling including at all different levels.”
