Here's How Many Electric Cars In Elmhurst

ELMHURST, IL – The other day, an Elmhurst resident said on social media he bet Elmhurst had 1,000 electric vehicles.

He wasn’t far off. As of this month, the number was 944, according to the state.

Through a public records request, Patch got local numbers from the Secretary of State’s Office.

The electric vehicles in Elmhurst make up 2.7 percent of the total of 34,907 registered

According to the state, hybrid gas-electric-powered vehicles number 1,701 in Elmhurst, or 5 percent of the total.

Gas vehicles make up more than 90 percent of local cars in Elmhurst.

In DuPage County, electric vehicles total 17,095, or 2.6 percent of the total. That was a nearly 40 percent increase from a year earlier, when the number was 12,266.

Four years ago, the county only had 3,881 registered electric vehicles.

Last year, four Elmhurst aldermen – Mike Brennan, Chris Jensen, Jacob Hill and Rex Irby – suggested the City Council consider requiring builders to design houses to accommodate future charging stations.

In March, the council voted to buy two Ford Lightning electric pickup trucks for public works. A month later, it approved the purchase of an electric vehicle for the police department.
