Meet The Charity: Garden City's Children's Leukemia Research Assoc.

GARDEN CITY, NY — Local charities are the unsung heroes of our communities. Nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations strive to create lasting change and positively impact the lives of those around them.

Some people start organizations as a way to cope with grief, some see an issue they want to tackle, and some want to bring lasting change. Sometimes, all those reasons apply.

Patch wants to highlight your local charity and connect it with community members who want to help and do good, so that way, more people can benefit. Here is just one of many charities doing terrific work in your community.

What is your mission?
CLRA supports research efforts towards finding the causes and a cure for leukemia and assists families in meeting the financial obligations incurred in blood cancer treatment.

What does your charity do to further its mission? Please list examples.
CLRA provides research grants into the most promising leukemia research, in the hopes of isolating the causes, improving treatments, and finding a cure. Our Patient Aid program provides co-pay assistance for the reimbursement of leukemia/blood cancer related medical and pharmacy bills.

What inspired you to start your charity?
CLRA was founded in 1965 by a group of concerned and dedicated volunteers to support research efforts towards finding the causes and cure for leukemia and to assist families in meeting the financial obligations incurred in treatment. Most of these community leaders were senior executives of major corporations, and several of the founders had lost one of their own children, nieces, nephews, or children of friends and colleagues to cancer.

What is the most memorable moment you’ve had since starting your organization?
There are too many to list. Telling a parent of a child with leukemia that we CAN help with their medical bills is the BEST part of the work we do.

What else would you like people to know about your charity?
CLRA is dedicated to supporting blood cancer patients and important research. We love to talk to our patients, to learn their names and stories. We get to know our patients because we care. We understand the need for financial assistance with medical bills. This is what sets our small and mighty organization apart from others. Our research doctors depend on early stage funding from us to propel their efforts further.
